For the first time, Black Phoenix Rising: Death and Resurrection of Black Lives is offered as a free 6-week online mini course at Wesleyan University from March 7-April 17, 2022! Black Phoenix Rising explores scholarship in Black studies, sociology, and science and technology studies that grapples with Black people’s ways of resisting material and symbolic death in American life and culture. The course explores critical social theories and creative practices that center Black people’s everyday practices of revolt, liberation, and identity in the face of violent racism.

Black Phoenix Rising draws on the figure of the phoenix as an organizing metaphor for Black peoples’ contestations with death and as a site for Black radical analysis. By telling the stories of Black people, real and imagined, who cut racism against the grain of death, Black Phoenix Rising counters the narrative that Black people’s only meaningful existence is death through sociologically informed creative storytelling.
